A beautiful tetradrachm from Syracuse

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.40 g, 6 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Head of Arethousa to right, her hair bound with a fillet, wearing pendant earring and necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 571 (V287/R391). Jameson 769 (same dies). SNG ANS 184 (same dies). A sharp and attractive piece of fine style. Very minor flatness and light pitting on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Ex Leu Web Auction 6, 9 December 2018, 46 and previously from the Maggiore Collection, formed in the late 1970s to early 2000s.
